SAF – REVIVE RUDOLPH’S RIVERVIEW

In March of 2007 following an outcry from the architecture and design community, the Sarasota County School Board granted a one year period for the purpose of allowing the public an opportunity to develop preservation alternatives for the original 1958 Riverview High School buildings designed by internationally recognized architect, Paul Rudolph. The project was Rudolph’s largest commission in Florida and marks a transition in his career for it was in the fall of 1957 that Rudolph was appointed Chair of the Department of Architecture in the School of Fine Arts at Yale University.
If an acceptable solution is not proposed, these buildings will be demolished. The Sarasota Architectural Foundation (SAF) is leading the process to determine an adaptive use and the financial plan for the preservation of these important buildings. A Request for Proposals (RFP) from architect and developer teams will be announced in August 2007 and proposals will be due in November 2007. The plan for the RFP is currently underway through the work of the SAF in conjunction with a Professional Advisor, Mr. Bill H. Liskamm, FAIA.
This effort aims to be a benchmark for the preservation of Modern Architecture. It will not only recognize this seminal project and its notable architect but will stand as a remarkable example of social and environmental sustainability. It is important to note the fundamental features of sustainable design that were present in the original project such as natural ventilation, shading, and the use of natural light, all features that are finding renewed popularity in sustainable architecture today.
