Well\, there are two surprises here. Most Sarasotans don’t even know about the 120-acre Lemur Conservation Foundation (LCF) Reserve in Myakka City\, home to six species of these totally captivating prosimians indigenous to Madagascar. The Reserve is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of lemurs\, through programs of scientific research and education. With their native habitat constantly threatened by deforestation\, the Reserve is a figurative Ark in the middle of southwest Florida.\n  Any thoughts as to the Paul Rudolph connection? It turns out that the Reserve property was purchased with proceeds from the sale of the Rudolph-designed Green residence in Buck’s County\, PA. This was the forward-thinking concept of LCF Vice Chair Penelope Bodry-Sanders\, who generously engineered the plan and donated the initial funds.\n  Thanks to SAF Board Member Anne Essner\, our group of 20 has been given a rare opportunity to visit the Lemur Reserve on Sunday\, May 1. We’ll start with informative talks by LCF Executive Director Alison Grand\, PhD\, and SAF Board Member and Architecture Historian Christopher Wilson\, PhD\, followed by a guided tour of the facility. Best of all\, we will walk among the lemurs in their lush forest\, and might even catch a glimpse of the lemur babies born in April. https://www.lemurreserve.org/\n  The Reserve is not open to the public\, so this is likely your only chance to have an up-close lemur experience outside of a 26-hour journey to Madagascar. The tax-deductible admission will be divided between LCF and SAF. This is an outing you’ll surely remember for years to come\, and your participation benefits two very important causes.\n  The Reserve is about a 55-minute drive from downtown Sarasota. If you are interested in lunch before the tour\, we’ll meet at 11:45 am at Stottlemyer’s Smokehouse (19 East Road\, off Fruitville Road\, located between downtown Sarasota and the Lemur Reserve). Lunch will be a la carte and is not included in the event price.
