SAF's special guest speaker, architecture curator Dylan Turk, will focus on the unique story of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Bachman-Wilson House, a pristine 1954 Usonian House originally constructed in Millstone, New Jersey.  The house was acquired in 2014 and integrated into the collection story at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR. It opened to the public in November 2015. Mr. Turk will discuss his role as the project curator, the early conversations about bringing architecturally significant structures to Crystal Bridges, the unique challenges of relocating a Frank Lloyd Wright House, and the monumental impact the House has had on the museum's audience, collection and field.

The success of the Bachman-Wilson House dramatically amplified Crystal Bridges' architecture program, thus justifying the recently acquired Buckminster Fuller Fly’s Eye Dome. Turk will discuss this project and the process of erecting the Fly's Eye Dome this summer. Finally, he will link the five AIA awarding-winning architects in the Crystal Bridges architecture program to Sarasota Modernism.

There will be an audience Q & A and a meet-and-greet reception following the lecture.

Dylan Turk joined Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in 2015. Turk curated Building Crystal Bridges: Art, Architecture, Nature a focused exhibition that debuted at the Museum in September, 2015. Building Crystal Bridges is the first exhibition to explore the story of Crystal Bridges’ evolution—from initial conversations, a sketch on a napkin, and the architectural genius of Moshe Safdie—to the cultural institution it has become today. This exhibition morphed into a publication, Art in Architecture, which was published in 2016.

Most recently, Turk lead the curatorial force behind Frank Lloyd Wright’s Bachman-Wilson House. As the complicated reconstruction of the house occurred, Turk researched Wright, the unique history of the Bachman-Wilson House, and the Modernist connections to the regions. Through the development of a diverse platform of interpretation, guests have opportunities to explore the prolific career, principles, and legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright. The Bachman-Wilson House opened to the public on November 11, 2015. The publication Frank Lloyd Wright’s Bachman-Wilson House will be released later this year.

Turk’s ongoing work at Crystal Bridges focuses on the collection, presentation, and scholarship of the collection, with an emphasis on the development of burgeoning architecture projects including the recently acquired Buckminster Fuller Fly’s Eye Dome.

Turk is a Little Rock, Arkansas native who earned his bachelor’s degree in History of Art and Architecture from the University of Arkansas.
